Our family recently returned home from a much anticipated sailing vacation. I know, a sailing vacation may seem like an odd choice for a man who spends six months at sea, but, it was daddy who orchestrated our seafaring adventure.
First, I would like to say, that for the most part, we had a very nice time. We were able to sail to beautiful locations and see and do some really cool stuff. However, we did run into some rough conditions along the way (nothing to do with the winds or the water), that could have easily been prevented with a little more planning and forethought.
Our vacation odyssey took place at the end of the summer, two months into my husband’s time home. Prior to leaving for our vacation, my family had enjoyed much of the summer together. No school. Minimal activities. Loads of time at beaches, pools, barbeques or just hanging around the house….together. As nice as that sounds in an article in a parenting magazine, that much time together with a young family can actually lead to some issues. By issues, I mean drop down, drag out, fist to cuff battles. Dropping our “shore warriors” on a 33 foot sailboat for five days presented my husband and I with challenges that we did not anticipate, but clearly should have been expected. The squabbles began early and seemed to only intensify with close containment of the boat. This took a toll on all of us, especially our captain and trip planner. Captain Daddy had already spent two months on the front lines at home with our family where brief retreats to a buddy’s house or a long bike ride were permitted. However, on a 33 foot boat, such retreats were not possible. As stay-at-home mom/field general, I have developed a high tolerance for sibling wars. My husband’s tolerance levels are far less sophisticated. Eventually, we came up with a workable strategy to combat the rising surges: shorter sail times, followed by more time ashore–preferably destinations with wide open spaces (beaches and parks), allowing our sail troopers (daddy included) to blow off steam.

Lesson learned. The key is to a successful family vacation is to plan it when the conditions are optimal. Our life as a maritime family is different. Yes, daddy does go to work for three months at a time. But, the flip side, is that he is home with us, for three months at a time as well. The key is to take advantage of this situation, not be blindsided by it. If possible, a vacation should be planned when daddy first gets home. Yes, maybe he’ll be a bit shell shocked after his “quiet time” at sea, but his tolerance levels will be refreshed. He will also actually be craving family time. Subsequently, when daddy gets home, the kids are so thrilled to see him that they tend to focus on him instead of declaring war against their sister who last cookie, or their brother who is breathing in their air space. In general, family time–together time is more enjoyable, more peaceful when daddy is fresh on the scene. There is no reason why that peace at home cannot be packed up and taken on vacation. In fact, it can and should be!

Last week our crew finished up school for the summer. Our children are young. We still have many years before we see the tassel of even a middle school graduation. However, that’s not to suggest that our little one’s last week at school was without pomp, circumstance, ceremony and celebration. To many, this may seem silly. However, to the majority of cap-and-gown wearing kindergarteners, this is a momentus occasion. For the next thirty minutes, I laughed and cried and spaztically switched between video and digital cameras, trying to capture every moment. During a lull in the action, I noticed the couple to my right, skillfully “tag-teaming” the graduation. (He worked the digital, while she handled the video). Excited for their graduate, they were ready for action. As the graduation program came to a close, the kindergarten teacher dismissed the class one last time. Almost immediately the ceremonial order gave way to celebratory chaos as the new grads took off running for their proud parents. I watched as the tag team to my right scooped up their little one. Mom hugged while dad high-fived. Eventually a semi-toothless little graduate emerged from the family-style rugby scrum, to present his parents with his hard earned dimploma. Pride and happiness oozed from his every pore.
Pulling my attention back to the remaining kinder crowd, I spotted our esteemed graduate bounding through the crowd, heading right for me. A wave of panic hit me. The smile on his face was joyous and genuine, but would it last? I began to fret that our little guy would become sad or disappointed once he reached me, and only me. Sure, daddy had called the night before from the ship to wish him well, but would that be enough to carry him through this special day? Would seeing the other families–moms and dads, celebrating together with their grads, make him sad? I wondered. I worried. I waited….
When our graduate finally made his way to me (he took the long route), I gushed, making sure he knew how proud I was of him. He beamed. He was thrilled to see his grandparents and very happy to learn that we were going out to lunch to celebrate his special day.
However, as we piled into the minivan, his mood began to change. He became subdued and serious, expressing a concern about my photography and video-taking abilities. Although I believe I pose no threat to Martin Scorses, I was fairly confident in assuring our new graduate that he would enjoy the graduation video that I had just shot. This was met with a deep sigh (and probably a dramatic eye roll). I was told, in no uncertain terms, that the video was not for him, it was for daddy. He went on to explain that he knew how much daddy really wanted to be at his graduation. Having a video–a “good video” would allow daddy to share in the special day when he got off the ship.
Bittersweet moment. Reality had blown through Cloud 9. Daddy was not at graduation. Yet, there was no bitterness or resentment. At the tender age of six, our son had not only learned to accept the situation and deal with it, but he had also learned how to make it better for himself and his dad. I was stunned. I was impressed. And, once again, I was proud.

At lunch, I quietly marveled over our little guys thoughts and comments. Was there some sort of a divine event that rocketed our son to a higher, more profound level of maturity and understanding? Did I miss something? As he wiped his ketchup fingers on his tie and devilishly delighted in serenading the table with an original score orchestrated from his armpit, my devine maturity theory went up in smoke. He was still a silly little six year old. However, he was also a silly little six year old who had 100% confidence in his daddy’s love for him, regardless of his daddy’s location. This secure unwavering love didn’t happen overnight. It happened everynight, over six silly and wonderful years from the land and from the sea. And, it was his to keep forever.

Our kindergartener learned a lot this year. He can read. He can write. He can count the money in his piggy bank. However, no lesson was more precious then the one he learned somewhere between the many nights his dad had tucked him into bed and the nights that his goodnight kiss came via long distance “ship to shore” phone call. Daddy loved him. Plain and simple. Sure and true. It didn’t matter where daddy’s ship took him, daddy’s heart was always home with us. Forever and Always.

Many sailors have a full family at home. They are married and have children. It is not always easy to understand what this means for people that are not going through it. We have similar situation with our Military where one of the spouses are posted overseas or are out on tours of duty, lasting up to and above 6 months.
Any person having to leave the family behind for a longer period of time as with sailors being out for 3 to 6 months are going through some hard times mentally. The person left behind is also having a mentally hard time. Some people are taking the separation a lot better than others. However I have found that families with small children sometime have a ruff time as the stress of being alone raising small children can be very high. I have yet to find somebody that finds it easy.
We have been fortunate here at Maritime Community to have found a Mother of 3 married to a Master Mariner that has agreed to write about some of the problems and trials that they have to get through as a single parent and as a family being separated for longer periods of time while the husband is out at sea on a contract.
We are looking forward to have her onboard with us.

The maritime community in eastern Canada, more specific in Saint Lawrence River is where we are going to start our voyage of discovery. This part of the voyage into the Great Lakes is very active since there is a lot of traffic on the Saint Lawrence River that doesn’t go any further up river than Montreal. Many of the ships are simply to large to enter the Seaway locks system and go further into the Great Lakes. This is by no stretch of the imagination the only place where there are ships. There are many more ports on the east coast of Canada. You also have ships coming and going on Canada’s west coast in places like Vancouver Island and the main land coast. We will get back to the various locations later in another post.

Having a lot of ships moving around in the local waters means that there has to be a very active and well-organized maritime community that can offer the back up and service that these vessels will need. There is always need for repairs and supply of just about anything available under the sun. The service people in the maritime community have to be available on relative short notice. It’s not like in the industrial sector where all stops at days end. Ships continue to move around the clock.
People live onboard these ships and they have to make sure that the ship can continue to operate around the clock. That is their job. Engineer will look after the engines and other mechanical work that has to be done. The navigation officers will make sure that they move safely from port to port loading and unloading the cargo they be hired to transport.
In Montreal, the demand on fast service is very common as this is the place where you have the first lock entering into the Saint Lawrence Seaway and things tend to happen very fast. Ships that enter into the Seaway for the first time might have some problems that are usually ironed out very fast. The demand for continues movement while in the Seaway is quiet high.

This light introduction to the demand for service speed in Montreal is just the beginning of a series of articles under way covering the Maritime Community in USA and Canada.

What does the term “Ship Spares In Transit” really mean? Free movement of “Ship Spares” for ships in international trade. First of all we have to understand how import shipments are handled when it comes to Customs in the various countries. Most countries have a particular set of laws for taxes and duties that apply to import of various products. A ship in international trade is exempt from paying any of these taxes and duties to the various countries that they will visit. If it was their home country Custom can levy in most cases the various taxes and duties that are applicable. If the ship is carrying a foreign flag they are exempt from those taxes and duties. This term “Ship Spares In Transit” basically indicates to Customs that the parts are destined to go onboard a foreign flag vessel and are just transiting the country, meaning arriving as freight and depart as parts onboard the ship (end-user)

The flow of “Ship Spares In Transit” is international and relative very high volume. Some parts of the world have more than others but that is due to ships trading patterns. Ship spares processed this way are usually moving fairly fast and Customs in general are very accommodating the keep the delay at bare minimum.

There are a variety of companies specializing in this kind of forwarding and trading and most of them are very good at their job and well connected around the world.

Martin over on Dieselduck wrote the other day about OEM parts and how easy it was to be fooled with pirate parts passing as OEM parts.

I tend to agree with Martin on this subject but I will add a few things to it. The people that have pushed the market into this situation are mostly ship management companies. The way I see this all happening is simply a matter of money. As always, money talks!

When the request for parts or stores is sent to the company head office they in turn request a price bid from 3 suppliers. In most cases the lowest bid will get the order to supply. It should also be said that lowest bid is not always the best for us on the ships. Many of these things can be contributed to people in purchasing not having enough experience to deal with these issues.

In my current position as purchasing officer for a supply company I see this happening all the time. A request doesn’t turn into order unless it is competitive in pricing. This in turn has allowed for substandard products to enter into our market. If you want to have the order you have to supply a product that “can” do the job but at a cost that is acceptable to the management company.

Where we all have to be vigilant is where we allow these products to be purchased and used. Consumables are one area where these substandard items are used a lot. Spare parts for certain equipment should not be allowed to be substituted at all in my opinion. There is too much at risk doing it. I personally think that you can get away with using sub standard products when it doesn’t affect the safety of the ship or its operation. Example being an overboard valve. You would not use an inferior type valve in place for a certified quality product and risk having it all fail on you while at sea. This is maybe an extreme example but it could happen. Ask at same time; Who certified the valve and How? On the other hand you don’t need a high cost fancy flush valve for a toilet.

Shipping bulk cargo wintertime in north Atlantic means that your cargo most likely will be exposed to severe weather conditions while crossing the open sea. What can you do in order to have maximum protection for your cargo? Sometimes a charter requirement to the ship is demanding the use of hatch cover tape. The reason for this is that the joint between the various sections in the outside hatch cover is where most of the leaks occur. This is considered being the weak point of the hatch. Most hatch covers on ships are folding type. It simply means that there are multiple sections in a hatch cover and when it opens it simply folds like a paper so the storing space required while open is minimum. The storing space for the open cover is usually in between the various hatch openings. While a hatch cover is open you can easy see the condition and also the type of joint it has between the each section. Usually they are overlapping and the bottom section comes with a fairly heavy-duty rubber gasket that receives the overlapping part of the other section. Additional to the weight of each hatch cover section there is also a mechanical securing. All sides and top has a mechanism called hatch cover cleats, that helps pulling it all together and securing it properly. Hatch cover tape has been around for many years and will most likely continue to be in demand for this particular use for many years to come. It is a very cheap insurance for your cargo and relative easy to install. Most ship crews are familiar with the application. Choosing the right type of tape for a particular application can sometimes be a problem. It is very important that the right hatch cover tape is chosen for your application. The side of the hatch should have a different tape from the one used on top. Sufficient use of heat when installing the tape makes for very good adhesion. For some tips on installation go to THIS article. Some additional tips can also be available by contacting the editor. Most of the major supply centers have this type of product available usually on relative short notice.

When your ship is calling ports in the cold north it is good to feel safe that your lifeboat engine will start if need be. There are a variety of preventive measures that you can take and it all adds up to a more secure lifeboat.

Let us start with the starting battery. When a battery is fully charged and exposed to 0 deg F it has only 40 % cranking power. It is at 100% cranking power when the temperature is 80 deg F. To prevent this loss of cranking power we can install a heated box for the battery. Using a heated box we must have a thermostat to prevent over heating. We can also install battery thermal heating pad. This is a thermal pad that wraps around the battery. It is available for most sizes of batteries.

For the engine we can heat the oil pan in a similar way. There is a silicone heating pad made for this purpose and it comes with adhesive backing and can be glued to the oil pan. The availability for these heating pads is in 220v and 120v. For the oil pan size depend on the volume of your engine oil. Max watt output that I have found so far is 400W.

These two small modifications to your lifeboat will greatly improve your chances of having a trouble free voyage in the cold north.

The old systems details was left out in the last post and I was aksked to give more details on how it worked and why it failed.

Here are some of the working of it;

This system would use air as a medium, so the diaphragm separated the oil from the rest of the system. If it was full of diesel fuel, it would give a false reading because the ‘head pressure’ (the height of the gauge above the bottom of the tank) would introduce an offset equivalent to whatever volume of oil in the tank at the height of the pressure gauge. Effectively, whatever height the pressure gauge was, it would read zero whenever the oil was at the same level as the gauge, or negative when it was below the height of the gauge.

The failure probably occurred when the diaphragm or fittings in the sensor leaked and filled it with oil.

Back in the old days.. gauging was done with an external gauge glass for visual viewing of the tank level. There was also some sensor type gauging systems the cam along using a sensor with a tube connection to an external indicator gauge.

How do you covert an old system like this to a more modern system using digital displays etc.

Here are one senario using a day tank for 3.35 tons of diesel fuel with a density of .8284 as a sample;

You need a pressure transducer that can be physically adapted to the bottom of the tank, and it would be electrically hooked up to a digital indicator programmed to read the pressure but is scaled (programmed) to convert the pressure into volume. The scaling would be calculated from the depth and dimensions of the tank, using the density of oil.

In this case, you need a pressure transducer that reads 1.72 PSI, or 47.63 in. H2O, or 3.5 in. Hg, minimum. (Don’t get one that reads more than twice that, however. You lose resolution.) This is quite low. Be sure that the ‘wetted’ components of the transducer are compatible with Diesel fuel. (Usually not a problem as most of the time they use Stainless Steel.)

The pressure of oil when the tank is full is 47.63 in. H2O as you supplied a density of .8284 for Diesel. If your tank is 57.5 in. deep then that is how you select the transducer. The digital indicator is scaled accordingly to convert into litres, gallons, etc. for every inch of depth.
Mounting brackets for the transducers are usually available from most dealers
